Geopark Code of Practice for Sustainable Tourism

Geopark Code of Practice for Sustainable Tourism The Geopark Code of Practice for Sustainable Tourism is created to help businesses to work together for the benefit of local business, the environment, and the well-being and livelihood of local community's.

The Geopark Code of Practice for Sustainable Tourism

The Code of Practice for Sustainable Tourism is a framework for building sustainable tourism practices into tourism operations.  It’s also a framework for partnering with the Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark and for working with other tourism operators in the Geopark region.

The Code is based on 6 principles that help a business move towards sustainable tourism practices:

  1. Working Together
  2. A Cared-for Landscape
  3. A Well-understood Heritage
  4. Vibrant Communities
  5. Strengthened Livelihoods
  6. Sustainable Environmental Management

Adopting and Implementing the Code

An online system guides businesses through a step-by-step approach in implementing actions that support the principles.  We also support tourism operators through group workshops and one-to-one mentoring sessions.

The Geopark partners with the Burren Ecotourism Network, a network of tourism businesses in the Geopark region who are committed to sustainable tourism and whose members sign up to the Code.  Joining the Burren Ecotourism Network and adopting the Code enables a business to implement economically beneficial environmental practices, take part in networking opportunities, contribute to destination-wide conservation initiatives and be part of a destination marketing programme.
