23.11.2018

The  Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark received the Sustainable Tourism Award at the Annual Chamber Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards in November 2018. The Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark  has sustainability as a core element of all it does and its highly innovative,  award-winning Geopark Code of Practice for Sustainable Tourism programme enables tourism businesses to monitor and improve their environmental impact.

A core element of being a UNESCO Global Geopark is to promote sustainable tourism using best practice in conservation and integrated management while promoting the culture, heritage and geological history of its region. By providing leadership in these areas the Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark aims to foster the ideals of its tag-line ‘People, Place, Learning, Livelihood’ and act as a model for sustainable tourism in other areas.

The objectives are to work with all stakeholders to establish the Burren as a globally recognized sustainable tourism destination that meets best international standards while maintaining the integrity of the livelihoods of all who live there and contributing to reversing the population decline that affects some areas while conserving the landscape, flora & fauna and heritage that comprise the environment that has sustained communities for thousands of years.
